What lies on it is \u003cstrong\u003eembroidered by hand — and across the entire surface.\u003c\/strong\u003e Not at the ends, not as a border, but from one edge to the other: cream-coloured tendrils that wind and branch, with individual flowers in between, each placed on its own, and small leaves at the tips.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHold the wrap close to the light and you will see what these tendrils are made of: chain stitches, one after the other, barely a millimetre long. The embroiderer works without a printed pattern. She places the tendril as it comes, and that is why no two run alike — tighter in one place, sweeping wider in another, one more flower here, one fewer there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is the difference from a patterned fabric. A pattern is set up and then runs by itself; an embroidery comes about stitch by stitch, and every single one takes time. On a surface of 73 by 196 centimetres, that means many hours of someone sitting with a needle in hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt takes \u003cstrong\u003e25 to 28 days\u003c\/strong\u003e to finish a wrap like this — almost a month, and most of that is spent not on the weaving but on the needle.
