Anyone who thinks yak is scratchy is thinking of the coarse guard hairs of around 49 micrometres — these are separated out. Only the fine undercoat of 16 to 19 micrometres is used: soft on the skin, and it insulates measurably better than the guard hairs. A warm scarf for winter that can take some wear: of the fine animal fibres measured side by side in the specialist literature, the yak fibre has the highest strength; its scales lie flat, so the fabric hardly felts and tolerates washing well.
