Silk scarf "Num Ri" – Green, handwoven

Num Ri is a mountain in the Khumbu, 6,635 metres high: a long ridge with a pyramid-shaped summit.

The most colourful scarf in this series. Moss and petrol green with wine red set the base tone, together with turquoise, violet, rust orange, ochre and pink. The fabric is worked in bands — stripes, zigzag, diamonds, paisley and scattered flowers alternate along the length. Ochre-yellow fringes.

Woven by hand in Nepal, from pure silk. It weighs around 260 grams.

The elegance of pure silk

Silk is one of the very finest natural fibres: gossamer-fine, supple and with a characteristic shimmer that gives any outfit a distinctive note. At the same time the fibre is naturally temperature-balancing – pleasantly cool on warm days, gently warming when it turns cooler.

Where the shimmer comes from

The silkworm produces two protein filaments, almost triangular in cross-section, glued together by the silk gum. During degumming the gum dissolves and the three-sided filaments are exposed. They refract the light like many small prisms and throw it back in many directions at once – not in one.

Therein lies the difference from a fabric that reflects in one direction: that shines loudly and always the same. Silk scatters. Its shimmer stays soft, lies over the whole surface and shifts with every movement – you do not see it at once, and the second time it is not quite the same again.

It is not the strong shine that marks good silk, but the casual one.

Changeant – two colours in one fabric

Almost all of these scarves are woven changeant. Warp and weft, the lengthwise and the crosswise threads, carry different colours. Both are always there; depending on how the light falls and where you look from, one or the other comes to the fore. The scarf changes its tone without anything about it changing.

This colour effect is not created in the dyeing but at the loom. The weaver works with two yarns and has to think ahead to an effect that only becomes visible in the finished cloth. With a printed fabric the colour lies on the fabric – here it lies within it.

That is also the reason why two photos of the same scarf never look quite the same.

Silk and sun

Silk reflects and absorbs part of the UV radiation, more than cotton; a scarf over the shoulders and neck therefore shades the skin effectively. Our scarves do not carry a tested UV protection factor – that would require a measurement of the fabric. The same absorption is also the reason why silk yellows over time in direct sunlight: do not dry it in the sun, and do not store it where the sun shines on it.

Care instructions

Silk is a high-quality natural fibre, valued for its fine sheen, its suppleness and its pleasant comfort. With the right care, these special properties are preserved for many years.

✓ Air it regularly rather than washing it often

Silk is often called “self-cleaning”. That is not quite right – the fibre does not clean itself. But it hardly takes on odours and releases them again when aired. That is why a silk scarf rarely needs washing; aired after wearing, in the shade, it is fresh again. Whatever has soaked into the fibre has to be washed out.

✓ Gentle hand washing recommended

Wash only when needed: hand washing in cold to lukewarm water (max. 30 °C) with a special silk detergent or a mild delicates detergent.

✓ Do not rub, brush or wring

Move the fine silk fibres only gently in the water and then rinse thoroughly.

✓ Remove moisture gently

After washing, press out carefully or roll in a clean towel to absorb excess water.

✓ Dry lying flat or hung up loosely

Avoid direct sunlight and do not tumble dry.

✓ Iron only at a low temperature

Ideally slightly damp, preferably on the reverse side or with a cloth between the iron and the fabric.

✓ Store with care

Store clean and completely dry, loosely folded or rolled up, protected in breathable fabric bags – no airtight plastic bags.

✓ Professional cleaning if needed

For heavier soiling, a cleaner specialising in silk is advisable. The care instructions on the label always take precedence.
