Yak Wool Scarves

Handwoven scarves of pure yak wool, made in Nepal in small numbers.

Yak wool is the undercoat of the yak. Anyone who thinks yak is scratchy is thinking of the coarse guard hairs of around 49 micrometres — these are separated out. Only the fine undercoat of 16 to 19 micrometres is used: soft on the skin, and it insulates measurably better than the guard hairs. A warm scarf for winter that can take some wear: of the fine animal fibres measured side by side in the specialist literature, the yak fibre has the highest strength; its scales lie flat, so the fabric hardly felts and tolerates washing well. Brown, grey and anthracite come from the animal, not from the dye bath.

With every item sold, the women who wove it are paid. What remains after deducting all selling costs contributes substantially to the work of Namaste Kids e. V. — accompanying more than 500 children in the mountain regions of the Himalayas, over years until the end of their schooling.

What this shop is for

Namaste Kids supports more than 500 children from very poor families, most of them in remote mountain regions of the Himalaya. Over many years, until the end of their schooling, so that they can go to school and grow up healthy.

Every purchase makes a twofold difference. With every item sold, the women who wove it are paid. What remains after deducting all selling costs contributes substantially to the work of Namaste Kids e. V. The aim is to break the cycle of poverty and lack of education that would otherwise continue from one generation to the next, so that families become less dependent on donations.
